The Thorlabs MX40B is a Digital Reference Transmitter designed for high-speed fiber optic test and measurement applications. It uses lithium niobate (LiNbO3) modulator technology and high-fidelity RF amplifiers for optimal performance. These user-configurable instruments include Mach-Zehnder intensity modulators (MZMs) with full-featured bias control, tunable or fixed-wavelength laser sources, RF amplifiers, and variable optical attenuators. With high-gain limiting amplifiers and user-adjustable output voltage swings, these transmitters are ideal for digital applications with bit rates up to 40 Gb/s.

The MX40B is compatible with various binary modulation formats and can accept a wide range of input voltages. The built-in telecom laser is tunable to the ITU 50 GHz grid and can be fine tuned to ±30 GHz. The laser input port uses PM fiber with a maximum input power of 20dBm. Connectors include FC/PC for fiber optic bulkheads and SMA or 2.92mm(K) for RF connectors, depending on the device.

The MX40B is the perfect solution for all your reference transmitter needs. It features a built-in digital RF amplifier, adjustable optical extinction ratio, integrated laser and intensity modulator, and optical power control. It also has an external loopback cable for custom configurations. The MX40B is easily controlled via an intuitive touchscreen interface or via USB or RS-232 connectivity. The MX40B supports bitrates up to 40 Gb/s and has a direct internal connection between amplifier and modulator. The built-in C-band laser is tunable to the ITU 50 GHz grating with a wavelength range of 1527.6 to 1565.5 nm. The MX40B has an amazing RF amplifier gain of 30dB and a wide small signal bandwidth of 20GHz.

The MX40B is a versatile instrument with monitoring and control functions and a rear panel with connectors for firmware upgrades. RS-232 and USB connectivity allow the user to remotely control the MX40B using serial SCPI commands according to application needs and personal preference. Instrument firmware can be easily updated by uploading new versions via the USB port. Additionally, a 15-pin I/O connector provides output from the power monitor in the optical path. This monitor provides a voltage proportional to optical power at two gain settings. These values ​​are accessible through the I/O DB15 connector and gain settings are determined by software and reported on the appropriate gain indicator pins. The power monitor's bandwidth is limited to approximately 150Hz and the maximum output voltage on the monitor pin is less than 12V.
