The 50-850-FC by ThorLabs is an advanced single mode gradient-index (GRIN) fiber collimator that is specially designed to couple and collimate light in or out of a fiber with superior efficiency and precision. Featuring a Ø1.8 mm clear aperture and standard single mode fiber coupling, the 50-850-FC is aligned at 850 nm and can be easily pigtailed with a 2.0 mm narrow key FC/PC connector for seamless integration with an optical system.

To ensure optimal performance when coupling a free-space beam into a fiber, precise alignment is crucial. It is recommended to use a kinematic tip and tilt mount and lens tube adapter, paired with an XYZ adjustable platform or a compatible kinematic mount paired with a lens tube adapter. Additionally, the 50-850-FC can be used in pairs, with a free-space beam between the lenses. It can be manipulated with many types of optics prior to entering the second lens. The collimators should be placed with a spacing of 15 ± 5 mm (working distance) between the front lens surfaces for maximum coupling efficiency. With these techniques and tools, the 50-850-FC can achieve a typical insertion loss of <0.1 dB, provided it is used within the specified working distance and mounted on tip-tilt mounts.

While the optimal working distance of each individual 50-850-FC may vary slightly, these deviations do not significantly affect the pair or individual performance. For best results, it is recommended to mount both collimators in kinematic adjustable mounts for final alignment. Additionally, a compatible FiberBench can be used to accommodate the 50-850-FC and allows modular optical components to be placed in the beam path. This collimator also boasts a maximum power output of 300 mW, making it a versatile and reliable option for a wide range of optical applications.
