The ThorLabs OSW8102 is a versatile and high-performing optical switch that can be used as a plug-in module for the PRO8 platform. The OSW8102 is a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based switch, boasting a switching configuration of 1 x 2 MEMS. This switch serves as an essential building block when constructing automated optical test networks.

The OSW8102 is designed with silicon MEMS technology, ensuring a long lifetime and lightning-fast switching mechanism. The MEMS technology also enables low crosstalk between channels, rated at an impressive -50dB. With a switching time of just 0.5 ms generally, the OSW8102 is guaranteed to deliver efficient and reliable performance across a broad wavelength range of 1240 nm to 1610 nm. Low insertion loss and remarkable repeatability of 0.01 dB define the 1 x 2 switch.

Although the OSW8102 may not have a dedicated device error system, device problems can be tracked using the PRO8000 (-4) / PRO800 mainframe status registers. This system consists of four separate registers: the ESR (standard event status register), ESE (standard event status enable register), STB (status byte register), and SRE (service request enable register). All these registers work together in order to provide system control and support. With features like device dependent error, power on, execution error, operation complete, command error, and query error all taken into account, these registers work together to provide a thorough overview of the system's operating condition.

The OSW8102's user-friendly display menu makes it simple to retrieve operating parameters using simple prompts and mnemonic symbols. Moreover, the PRO8 chassis display menu shows the channel numbers and important characteristics of the attached modules in addition to offering configuration options for the device. The OSW8102 is compatible with FC/APC connectors and can be configured using LabVIEW™ and LabWindows/CVI Drivers™ programs. For the safety of the user, the OSW8102 module may only be installed or removed with the mainframe switched off, and all modules must be fixed with all required screws.
