The ThorLabs OSW8104 is an exceptional optical switch series that is compatible with the PRO8 platform as a plug-in module. In addition to being designed using state-of-the-art microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology, it has a 1 x 4 MEMS switching configuration. This switch is a valuable building block for constructing automated optical test networks.
The OSW8104 is engineered to offer a long lifetime and rapid switching mechanism through its silicon MEMS technology. Additionally, its low crosstalk between channels, rated at -50dB, is a remarkable feature. The switch's general switching time of 0.5 ms is regarded as quick, while its broad wavelength range of 1240 nm to 1610 nm makes it very versatile. The 1 x 4 switch has low insertion loss and excellent repeatability of ±0.01 dB, making it a reliable choice for the user’s optical network.
The PRO8000 (-4) / PRO800 mainframe status registers can be consulted for device error monitoring. These registers offer an effective way to monitor errors and ensure smooth operations. This is beneficial because the OSW8104 does not have its own system to track these device errors. This system includes four registers that work together to provide different functions, including power on, command error, execution error, device-dependent error, query error, and operation complete. The ESE, SRE, ESR and STB registers enable access to these functions that provide the necessary control for device and status messages.
The user-friendly display menu of the OSW8104 is simple in its operation, with easily accessed operational parameters that use mnemonic symbols and simple prompts. The PRO8 chassis display menu also allows for easy configuration of the unit, displaying the channel numbers of the inserted modules and their main parameters. The OSW8104 is configurable with LabVIEW™ and LabWindows/CVI Drivers™ programs and is compatible with FC/APC connectors. To guarantee the user's safety, all modules must be installed or uninstalled while the mainframe is completely powered off. Additionally, each module must be securely attached with all necessary screws.
