The OSW8108 by ThorLabs is an innovative series optical switch that delivers high performance and reliability and serves as a “building block” for automated optical test networks. Designed as a plug-in module for the PRO8 platform, this microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based switch has a switching configuration of 1 x 8 MEMS, making it a valuable addition to any testing setup.

With its 1 x 8 switching mechanism based on silicon MEMS technology, the OSW8108 offers exceptional reliability and speed. Its MEMS technology also ensures a very low crosstalk between channels, rated at -50dB, while its switching time of 0.5 ms and broad wavelength range of 1240 nm to 1610 nm make it ideal for a range of applications. Additionally, the OSW8108 has low insertion loss and excellent repeatability of ±0.01 dB, providing consistent and reliable results every time. 

Although the OSW8108 doesn't have its own device error system, the PRO8000 (- 4) / PRO800 mainframe status registers can be used to track device errors. These registers include: the standard event status register, the standard event status enable register, the status byte register, and the service request enable register. Some of the functions provided detailed information on device status are power on, command error, execution error, device dependent error, query error, and operation complete.

The OSW8108 has a display menu that is user-friendly and features easily-accessed operational parameters that use simple prompts and mnemonic symbols. The PRO8 chassis display menu allows for easy configuration of the unit. In addition, the main menu displays the channel numbers of the inserted modules and their main parameters, providing a comprehensive overview of the testing setup. For added convenience, the OSW8108 is configurable with LabVIEW™ and LabWindows/CVI Drivers™ programs and is compatible with FC/APC connectors. The module may only be installed or removed with the mainframe switched off and all modules must be fixed with all required screws, which guarantees the safety of the user.
