The ThorLabs OSW8202 is a series optical switch module that is optimized for automated optical test networks. The PRO8 platform can be extended with the use of this series optical switch. It integrates easily and provides a great solution for constructing automated optical test networks. This is an incredibly useful tool that allows the user to customize your network as needed. The OSW8202 boasts a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based switching configuration of 2 x 2 MEMS, ensuring that it has a very long lifetime and is inherently fast. 

The OSW8202 utilizes a MEMS-based switching system which results in extremely low channel crosstalk and is rated at -50dB. This technology is known to switch within 0.5 milliseconds and covers a wide range of wavelengths from 1240 nm to 1610 nm. The 2 x 2 switching mechanism has low insertion loss and remarkable repeatability of ±0.01 dB, making sure that the optical network achieves optimum performance.

The OSW8202 does not feature its own device error detection system, but is able to operate with the PRO8000 (-4) / PRO800 mainframe status registers. Errors can thus be tracked using these important registers. The four registers included in this system are the standard event status register also known as ESR, the standard event status enable register also known as ESE, the status byte register also known as STB, and the service request enable register also known as SRE. All registers have different functions that work together to provide the user with a comprehensive error tracking system. Some of these functions include: command error, device dependent error, power on, operation complete, query error, and execution error.

The OSW8202 comes with a user-friendly display menu that enables you to quickly and easily access the operational parameters by using mnemonics and easy-to-follow prompts. With the PRO8 chassis monitor, the user can configure the settings such as channel numbers and other essential parameters for all added modules. The OSW8202 is an exceptional device which can be customized using LabVIEW™ and LabWindows/CVI Drivers™. Moreover, it is compatible with FC/APC connectors as well. For user safety, it is essential to always switch off the mainframe before installing or uninstalling any module. Additionally, all necessary screws must be firmly attached to every module.
