The PAF-X-5-C by ThorLabs is a FiberPort, an innovative, ultrastable device designed for easy and efficient coupling of light into and out of optical fibers. Whether one is seeking a compact solution for fiber coupling or collimation, the PAF-X-5-C is the ideal choice for various application needs. The FiberPort is comprised of three main components - a bulkhead with fiber connector, a Magnetic Lens Cell (MLC) adhered to a tilt plate, and a body. The bulkhead is securely fastened onto the FiberPort body using three flat head screws and the clamp plate, which allows the fiber bulkhead to rotate freely upon loosening the screws. The PAF-X-5-C features a movable lens as the alignment mechanism, which holds the fiber stationary during the alignment process.
With its built-in lens, the PAF-X-5-C enables five degrees of freedom for easy alignment. These degrees of freedom include angular alignment for tip and tilt, X and Y alignment of the lens linearly, and using the tilt and tip controls for Z adjustment simultaneously. The device boasts a travel range of ±0.7 mm in the X/Y direction and ±0.4 mm in the Z direction, with a resolution of 0.012" (0.32 mm) per revolution. The tip/tilt travel range is ±4° with a resolution of 1.32° (23 mrad) per revolution. Additionally, the locking screws on the front plate can be loosened to facilitate rotation of the bulkhead for PM fiber alignment.
The PAF-X-5-C FiberPort is compatible with AR-coated multimode, single mode, or polarization-maintaining fiber optic patch cables. It is highly recommended to use the FiberPort with these patch cables for optimal coupling and collimating performance. These cables are equipped with an antireflective coating on one fiber end, which enhances transmission and improves return loss at the fiber-to free-space interface. Moreover, the PAF-X-5-C enables alignment to an FC/APC-terminated, FC/PC-terminated or SMA-terminated fiber with six directional adjustments.
The MLC of the PAF-X-5-C is securely adhered to the tilt plate, which can be adjusted in the Z, q, and j directions (Axial, Tip, Tilt) using the three socket head cap screws (SHCS). The plunger screws provide counterforce against the SHCS, allowing for smooth and precise adjustments. The Z translation range is ±0.4 mm for a given position of the plunger screws, and the plunger screws can translate the positive extreme of the travel range in the Z direction over a distance of 2 mm. Additionally, the MLC can be translated in the X-Y directions using the setscrews located on the side of the PAF-X-5-C body.
