The ThorLabs PAF-X-7-A is a micropositioner FiberPort that serves as the perfect solution for those looking for a compact, ultrastable and easy-to-use platform for a light coupling out and into optical fibers. The FiberPort is designed to enable precise alignment to an SMA-terminated, FC/APC-terminated, or FC/PC-terminated fiber with six directional adjustments.
Featuring a movable lens as the alignment mechanism, the PAF-X-7-A is capable of holding the fiber stationary while ensuring that the coupling or collimation is accurate. The PAF-X-7-A is composed of a bulkhead that boasts a connector made of fiber, a body, and a tilting plate that contains a MLC (Magnetic Lens Cell). The FiberPort's body is securely attached to the fiber bulkhead using a clamp plate and three screws that are flat heads. By loosening these screws, the bulkhead can be freely rotated without any difficulty.
The MLC of the PAF-X-7-A, which adheres to the tilt plate, can be adjusted in Z/q/j (Axial, Tip, Tilt) using three SHCS screws (socket head cap screws). The plunger screws help in providing adequate counterforce to the SHCS. As per the current setup, the Z (optical axis) can translate up to 0.4 mm for a fixed position of the plunger screws. Moreover, the plunger screws are capable of transferring the greatest excursion of its movement in Z direction to a length of 2 mm. For X-Y translation, the MLC can be moved using the set screws that can be found to the side of the FiberPort body. On the leaf spring rests the MLC and X-Y screws that push against the cell of it. A third set screw behind the leaf spring can be used for locking. In most standard collimation/coupling applications, the range of motion of the aspheric lens in both X and Y directions is ±0.7 mm. However, only a small portion of this translation range is typically used.
On the external side of the PAF-X-7-A, the adjustment screws of the X-Y lens are present at both the 3 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions for easy access. Additionally, three plunger screws provide resistance when tilting the plate. The three SHCS provide the Z/q/j adjustments for the FiberPort, and together with the X-Y screws, are the only screws that are normally used in the alignment of the PAF-X-7-A. However, the tilt plate tension can be adjusted with the use of plunge screws, if needed. Finally, a the 7:30 position on the outer diameter the the body of the FiberPort, a locking screw can be found.
