The PN850R2A2 by ThorLabs is a Polarization-Maintaining (PM) fiber optic coupler, an exceptional solution designed to provide high performance in optical sensors, fiber gyroscopes, and optical amplifiers. Specifically designed for a wavelength of 850 nm, this coupler is capable of providing an extinction ratio of at least 18 dB for both the tap and signal ports. Additionally, the PN850R2A2 boasts a low excess loss within the specified bandwidth, ensuring exceptional performance in various applications.
The PN850R2A2 is available at a 90:10 coupling ratio, allowing it to split or combine signals as needed. The PN850R2A2 is crafted from PANDA fiber which allows it to retain a strong polarization extinction ratio (PER) when the light is sent along the fiber’s slow axis. Stress rods run parallel to the fiber's core, creating birefringence that ensures polarization-maintaining operation.
The PN850R2A2 also provides a wide operating range of -40 °C to 85 °C, making it suitable for use in a wide range of environments. This coupler is compatible with narrow key FC/APC and FC/PC connectors that are 2.0 mm, and its fiber leads are jacketed in Ø900 µm Hytrel®* tubing. The leads are also 0.8 m long. When using the coupler as a combiner, a fiber terminator should be connected to the unused output port to ensure that a fraction of the light does not travel through this leg of the device. Custom coupler configurations with other fiber types, alignment axes, coupling ratios, port configurations, or wavelengths are also available, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of applications.
