The ThorLabs DCC1240C is a versatile and highly-sensitive CMOS camera that is designed for use in a wide range of applications, including microscopy and monitoring. This compact camera is incredibly lightweight, measuring just 1.59" x 1.26" x 1.63" and weighing in at only 0.16 lbs, making it ideal for use in situations where space is at a premium. The DCC1240C has a full-frame resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and a color sensor. Thanks to the CMOS sensors used in the camera, users can switch between rolling and global shutter modes, providing a considerable higher dynamic range and an input for an external trigger. Rolling shutter noise is beneficial in achieving a better signal to noise ratio and a more consistent black level in comparison to global shutter mode.

One of the key features of the DCC1240C is its digital scaling feature, which helps to produce an improved image quality without undersampling artifacts. This feature uses a permanent anti-aliasing filter to ensure that images are clear and sharp, while the digital scaling function can result in a higher possible frame rate of up to 98 fps. The scaling factor increases the maximum frame rate about proportionately. To achieve maximum frame rate, the scaling factor must be selected first and then the maximum pixel clock frequency must be set. Additionally, the sensor on the DCC1240C has non-removable micro lenses on each pixel which has a directive efficiency and focus the incoming light for the subjacent smaller photodiode.

The camera is powered and controlled via a 5 V USB 2.0 port, which makes it incredibly easy to use. The USB 2.0 interface provides a gross bandwidth of 60 MBytes/s, and the camera is available in every standard PC and laptop. The DCC1240C has a robust metal housing and can be connected to a computer via the standard mini-B USB 2.0 connector.  Connection to the camera is also possible through a lockable micro D-sub connector, which also carries the optoisolated I/O signals. Optional CAB-DCU-T1 and CAB-DCU-T2 USB and trigger cables can be used in tandem with the USB 2.0 connection with additional trigger input and output ports on the DCC1240C. The exposure and readout/transfer events of the camera can be initiated with the trigger input while external events like strobe lights can be launched via the output trigger.
