The ThorLabs DCC1545M is a compact, lightweight CMOS camera with a monochrome sensor that boasts a full frame resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels, making it perfect for a wide range of applications such as microscopy and monitoring. The DCC1545M's small footprint and electronic rolling shutter make it ideal for industrial, security, and non-industrial settings where space is limited.
The DCC1545M offers a higher dynamic range and includes an input for an external trigger with its CMOS sensor that allows for the navigation of a rolling shutter mode. Powered and controlled via a standard 5 V USB 2.0 port, this camera can be easily interfaced with various systems, providing convenience and versatility. The images are digitized in the camera and transmitted digitally to a PC, ensuring efficient and seamless operation. The DCC1545M features a protective plastic housing which includes a CS-mount lens adapter, allowing for an effortless installation.
The DCC1545M utilizes the rolling shutter method, where pixel rows are reset and exposed sequentially, and then read out sequentially at the end of the exposure. However, this can result in image distortion for moving objects. To counteract this effect, the DCC1545M's software provides a global flash window, allowing the user to set the time by which flash activation is delayed, enabling simultaneous exposure of all rows of the rolling shutter sensor. This ensures that captured images are sharp and free from distortion. Furthermore, rolling shutter sensors offer a higher pixel density compared to global shutter CMOS sensors, providing superior image quality.
The DCC1545M also includes hot pixels. These are pixels that don't have a linear reaction to the incoming light and may not even react at all. A number of factors can lead to hot pixels, including contamination while fabricating the sensor and the age of the sensor. However, as the DCC1545M features a CMOS sensor, it may generate more hot pixels compared to CCD cameras under similar operating conditions. These hot pixels can be visible as individual bright dots in the image, especially with long exposure times, high gain settings, and high sensor operating temperatures. However, the DCC1545M has a maximum storage limit of 20 hot pixels, ensuring minimal impact on image quality.
