The XCL by ThorLabs is an innovative stereotaxic cannula holder that has been designed to hold a fiber optic cannula of Ø1.25 mm with utmost security during the implantation process using stereotaxic guidance. The holder and chuck of the XCL are constructed entirely using stainless steel, which makes it highly durable and easy to sterilize for repeated use.
The chuck of the XCL is specifically designed to securely hold a cannula with either a ceramic or stainless steel ferrule without slipping during the implantation process. It can be tightened and loosened by rotating the knurled sleeve, and the engraved arrow indicates the direction of rotation for tightening. The XCL features a Ø0.11" (Ø2.7 mm) side bore in the shaft for providing added torque with a ball driver when required.
The end of the XCL is equipped with a left-handed 8-32 tapped hole that is compatible with the Ø5 mm and Ø7.9 mm adapter arms. The left-handed design ensures that a cannula can be released without loosening the XCL, which minimizes stress on the specimen when releasing the cannula holder from an implanted cannula. The low disconnect force of 1.1 N (0.25 lbf) also helps in minimizing the stress on the specimen. The XCL can be attached directly to Ø5 mm and Ø7.9 mm adapter arms using the left-landed 8-32 tap at the end of the cannula holder. Additionally, a XC-CLAMP can be used to allow for coarse height adjustment between a cannula holder and Ø7.9 mm adapter arm via two 1/4"-20 thumbscrews.
