ThorLabs APD110A-M

The APD110A/M by ThorLabs is an excellent metric avalanche photodetector that is specifically designed for detecting light signals from DC to 50 MHz. It features a high sensitivity avalanche photodiode, which is combined with an ultra-low noise transimpedance amplifier to ensure fast and accurate low-light level detection. With its exceptionally low NEP, this photodetector is perfect for a wide range of applications, including spectroscopy, fluorescence measurements, laser radar, and optical rangefinders. It can even replace PMTs in certain applications because it is not affected by unwanted ambient light.

The APD110A/M comes in a slimline and rugged 2x2.5x1 inch3 shielded aluminum enclosure that is designed to accommodate threaded accessories. The removable threaded couple makes it easy to mount external optics, filters, apertures, or fiber adaptors with ease. The electrical connectors and the ON/OFF switch are conveniently located on the side walls of the housing, allowing easy access and minimizing the thickness of the photodetector for fitting into tight spaces. Moreover, the APD110A/M has three tapped M4 mounting holes and is powered by an external power supply, such as the PICO M8 power connector that supplies 12 V, 200 mA.

The APD110A/M's buffered output drives a 50 Ω input impedance up to 1.8 volts without requiring any external high voltage power supply for operation. The photodetector also has an active low-pass filter that effectively suppresses out of band noise. The internal gain mechanism of the APD110A/M increases its sensitivity, which is typically described by the M-factor (multiplication factor) and is temperature-dependent. While the photodetector operates on a fixed reverse bias voltage the actual APD M-factor will change with temperature. At 23°C ambient temperature, the APD110A/M is set to 50. Because of its extreme sensitivity, it is important to keep the photodetector away from unwanted light sources by using techniques such as baffling or other opaque barriers like black cloths or beam tubes. Appropriate bandpass filters should also be used in front of the detector to minimize the influence of stray light.
