The D400FC by ThorLabs is an InGaAs fiber optic photo detector that is capable of measuring both pulsed and CW light sources. The D400FC is designed to be completely self-contained and serves as an input module for converting electronic test equipment into an optical system. To optimize the use of the D400FC with free-space beams, it is recommended to utilize a fiber coupling package that is mounted into a kinematic mount, which allows for easy coupling into the photo detector.
The D400FC is a high-speed and ready-to-use photo detector that is made up of a detector, an internal 12V bias battery, a FC/PC bulkhead, and a ruggedized insulated housing. With a FC/PC type fiber optic bulkhead connector, the user can couple the D400FC to fiber-based light sources with ease. The D400FC utilizes an SMA style jack, which offers an optimized frequency response. The direct photocurrent out of the photodiode anode is a function of the incident light power and wavelength, which provides the user with precise measurement results.
The D400FC boasts many other impressive features including a reverse biased PIN photo diode and an ON/OFF switch. For the D400FC to reach its highest bandwidth capacity, it is advisable to use a direct connection with a device that has an impedance of 50Ω. In cases where a direct connection isn't feasible, using an SMA-SMA cable with a 50Ω terminating resistor at the end helps to reduce ringing by guaranteeing the coaxial cable retains its intrinsic impedance. If bandwidth is not a crucial factor, the user can increase the amount of voltage for a given input light by increasing the RLOAD up to a maximum of 10kΩ. This added flexibility allows for a wider range of applications and makes the D400FC a valuable asset to any laboratory or testing environment.
