The DET110 by ThorLabs is an exceptional high-speed silicon photodetector, equipped with a PIN photodiode, an internal bias battery with a 12 V, and an ON/OFF switch, all enclosed within a robust aluminum housing. The DET110 also features a removable 1” optical coupler that provides effortless mounting of spectral and ND filters alongisde other compatible stackable 1” lens mount accessories. Moreover, the detector comes with a #8-32 tapped hole, providing easy attachment.

The DET110 is ideal for measuring both continuous wave (CW) and pulse light sources. Its BNC output signal directly outputs the photocurrent from the photodiode anode and is dependent on the incident light power and wavelength. Typically, the photocurrent is transformed into a voltage for viewing on an oscilloscope or DVM by adding an external load resistance, RLOAD. For optimal bandwidth, it is suggested to use a 50Ω coaxial cable with the end of the coax boasting a 50Ω terminating resistor, as this matches the coax to its characteristic impedance which minimizes ringing. However, if bandwidth is not a concern, the user may increase the voltage for a given input light by increasing the RLOAD up to a maximum of 10KΩ.

The DET110 is compatible with a wide variety of 1” threaded accessories, including FC, SMA, and ST fiber adapters, stackable lens tubes for mounting optics, and cage assemblies, enabling the photodetector to be easily incorporated into elaborate 3D optical assemblies. Notably, the DET110 was designed for maximum accessibility to the photodetector by having the front surface of the diode extend outside of the housing. When using fiber adapters, it is essential to ensure that the fiber ferrule does not crash into the detector as this could cause damage to the diode and/or the fiber. An easy way to prevent this is to install an SM1RR retaining ring inside the 1” threaded coupler before attaching the fiber adapter.
