The ThorLabs DET210 is a top-of-the-line high-speed silicon photodetector that comes with a host of features designed to make it easy and convenient to use. The DET210 includes a photodiode and an internal 12 V bias battery that are enclosed in a durable aluminum housing, ensuring maximum protection from the elements and other external factors.

One of the key features of the DET210 is its removable SM1T1 1” optical coupler. This coupler makes it easy to mount ND filters, spectral filters, and other 1” stackable lens mount accessories, providing the user with great flexibility in terms of customization. Another important feature of the DET210 is its #8-32 tapped hole on the base of the housing, which allows the detector to be mounted directly to a compatible positioning device such as mounting plates and 1/2” post holders. This ensures that the detector remains stable and secure during use, and allows for precise positioning and alignment.

The DET210 is the ideal choice for measuring both pulsed and CW light sources, with its ON/OFF switch, bias batter, and reversed-biased PIN photo diode. The BNC output signal goes out of the photodiode anode with a direct photocurrent, and is a function of the incident wavelength and light power. The DET210 spectral responsivity can be used to estimate the amount of photocurrent to expect, and it is common for users to convert this photocurrent to a voltage for viewing on a DVM or oscilloscope with an external load resistance. For maximum bandwidth and minimum ringing, it is recommended that users employ a 0Ω terminating resistor at the end of a 50Ω coax cable.

The DET210 has an AC path to ground, even when switched to an OFF position. Users should expect to see an output response to an AC signal with the switch in this state, but because is is an unbiased detector, this mode operation is not recommended. To ensure maximum accessibility to the photo detector, the front surface of the diode extends DET housing’s exterior. When using fiber adapters, users should be careful to ensure that the fiber ferrule avoids collision with the detector, as this can potentially result in fiber or diode damage. To prevent this, an SM1RR retaining ring can be installed within the 1” threaded coupler prior to fiber adapter installation.
