The PDA50B2 by ThorLabs is a versatile, high-performance amplified detector designed to detect light signals ranging from 800 to 1800 nm. Housed in a compact, low-profile package, the PDA50B2 is the perfect solution for applications with space constraints. All connections and controls are located perpendicular to the light path, providing easy accessibility when integrating the detector into a variety of setups.
Designed with a buffered output to drive 50 Ω load impedances of up to 5V, PDA50B2 has an external housing with a removable threaded coupler and retainer ring that's compatible with 1" threaded accessories. This enables the user to easily attach apertures, light filers, optical lenses, and other compatible accessories for cage assembly. Additionally, the PDA50B2 features external SM1 (1.035"-40) threading, internal SM05 (0.535"-40) threading, and two universal mounting holes that accept both 8-32 and M4 threads, allowing for either vertical or horizontal post mounting.
The PDA50B2's low noise, low offset, high gain transimpedance amplifier allows gain adjustment over a 70 dB range, with 8 gain positions incremented in 10 dB steps. It is important to note that the bandwidth will decrease as the gain increases. The gain control knob, located on the top side of the unit, makes it easy to adjust the gain. The PDA50B2 also features a ±12 V linear power supply with a three-way switch, compatible with any 50 to 60 Hz, 100 V / 120 V / 230 V power outlet. It is imperative to ensure that the power switches on both the power supply and detector are in the off position before connecting to an outlet.
With an active area of the detector that is flush with the front of the housing, the PDA50B2 simplifies alignments within optomechanical systems. Any discrepancies at the borders of the active area of the detector can create detrimental capacitance and resistance effects that can alter the detector's output in the time-domain. Thus, it is essential to guarantee that any incident light striking the photodetector is perfectly centered on its active area. Other features of the PDA50B2 include a bandwidth from DC to DC - 510 kHz and a 0 to 10 V output.
