ThorLabs PM16-405

The PM16-405 by ThorLabs is a cutting-edge USB power meter designed to facilitate seamless integration of USB interfaces with an array of photodiode and thermal power sensors. The PM16-405 is the perfect tool for measuring the broadband spectra of various sources, such as LEDs, filament lamps, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources, and swept-wavelength lasers.

One of the standout features of the PM16-405 is its ability to measure pulsed sources with high pulse peak powers or long-duration pulses without saturation. Moreover, the PM16-405 is highly insensitive to the angle and position of the incident light beam, making it the preferred option for applications that cannot tolerate strong wavelength dependencies and/or saturation thresholds of photodiode sensors. The PM16-405's thermal power sensor has longer response times and lower power resolutions than photodiode sensors. However, this power meter is compatible with the S405C sensor head, which has been optimized to measure 190 nm to 20 µm wavelength and 100 µW to 5 W power optical signals while providing 5 µW resolution and response times better than 1.1 s.

The housing of the PM16-405 features an SM05 (0.535"-40) internal thread that is concentric with the input aperture. Additionally, the package comes with a removable adapter that can convert this to SM1 (1.035"-40) external threading. An EEPROM built into the connector of the PM16-405 contains sensor identification information and the NIST- and PTB-traceable calibration data, which is used by the power meter software. There are two 8-32 (M4) threaded mounting holes for post-mounting the sensor head, and other housing features support its integration with a compatible 30 mm case system.

The PM16-405's housing is easy to clean and can be wiped with a soft damp cloth. When cleaning the aperture filter, it should be treated as any other fine optic, and debris should be gently blown off using compressed air and wiped gently with an optic tissue wetted with propanol. Calibration of the PM16-405 should last for an extended period as long as the sensor has not been exposed to excessive optical power. To ensure the accuracy of this power meter and sensor, it is recommended to be calibrated yearly. With its remarkable features and unparalleled accuracy, the PM16-405 is a must-have for anyone in need of an efficient and reliable power meter.
