The PM160 by ThorLabs is a wireless power meter that serves as an exceptional tool that can aid in test and measurement systems. This device contains a Silicon photodiode and is equipped with a portable power meter that comes with a built-in graphical organic LED (OLED) display. The PM160 can be operated as a handheld tool or remotely using Bluetooth or USB connections, providing convenience and flexibility.
The PM160 boasts an ultra-slim sensor that is capable of rotating 270°, ensuring that the user can detect optical powers between 10 nW and 2 mW at wavelengths ranging from 400 to 1100 nm. Additionally, the device is accompanied by a sliding neutral density filter that increases the maximum measurable optical power to 200 mW, while the unit automatically detects the position of the filter to display the correct power measurement. The filter can be easily used by sliding the handle upwards and locking it in place over the detector. Moreover, the PM160 is meticulously calibrated to accurately convert the detected signal to the displayed power reading, ensuring accurate measurements. To maintain precision, it is recommended that the power meter be recalibrated annually.
The PM160 is incredibly versatile and can be post mounted in various orientations with three taps that are compatible with 8-32 and M4 screws. An external SM05 (0.535"-40) threaded adapter plate can be easily attached to the sliding ND filter or the end of the sensor arm, providing additional functionality. Other components, such as fiber connector adapters, can be attached directly to the PM160 through the external SM05 threads.
The PM160 is designed to operate in environments between 0 and 50 °C, making it an ideal tool for a wide range of applications. The device can be easily operated directly on the device or through the Optical Power Monitor OPM utility software from a PC, tablet, or laptop connected via a fast USB interface or Bluetooth. The PM160 offers user-friendly features such as display dimming and automatic shutdown to save battery and extend the lifetime of the OLED display. Display dimming occurs 7 seconds after a button is pressed, and the brightness can be adjusted through the menu interface of the device. This feature is convenient for those who use the PM160 remotely in a dark environment as it eliminates stray light from the OLED display. The device also features automatic shutdown, which activates after a specific time the device is turned on but never when the battery is being charged via the USB cable.
