The PM50 is compatible with the S200 Series thermal sensor head, which provides a wavelength range of 250 nm to 10.6µm and a power range of 20mW to 30W. This power meter features a broad wavelength range with a flat spectral response from 0.25 to 10.6µm. The device is powered by a 6V, 150mAh nickel-metal-hybrid (NiMH) battery that provides long life operation and fast recharging times. Additionally, an external power supply is included with the unit to recharge the battery pack and operate the device. The 12VDC power supply has the capability to recharge the unit in just 2.5 hours.

The front panel of the PM50 features an analog meter that shows the measured power level on the scale that corresponds to the selected power range. The range selector includes a rotary switch that allows the user to select the power range from 10mW to 100W. With the probe zero adjust feature, ambient thermal effects can be compensated by adjusting the PM50 to zero. When the PM50 is in auto shutdown mode, the unit will be activated for approximately 6 minutes before automatically powering down. Additionally, a low battery indicator with a red LED light warns the user when the battery voltage gets under a level where the measurement gets influenced.

On the top plate of the PM50, users will find a DB9 sensor jack, an analog output that outputs a voltage from 0.0 to 1.0V, an on-auto switch, and a charger input. The rear panel has a meter zero adjust feature used to adjust the mechanical offset of the meter to zero. It is important to note that the device should be turned off before zeroing the meter. Other features of the PM50 include automatic sensor detection, NIST-Traceable calibration, a rugged enclosure, and a pivoting stand.
