The Thorlabs PMT2101 is a high-performance, standalone single-channel Photomultiplier Module designed for use in fluorescence experiments. With an active area of Ø5 mm and a spectral range of 300 - 720 nm, it is capable of detecting low-intensity signals with high sensitivity, making it ideal for capturing weakly emitting optical signals.
The GaAsP photocathode of the PMT2101 provides superior quantum efficiency in the visible spectrum, resulting in increased sensitivity to incoming light compared to photocathodes composed of alkali metals. The PMT2101 also features a wide collection angle, further enhancing light detection. However, it is worth noting that exposure to high-intensity incident light may result in sensitivity degradation compared to alkali PMTs.
The PMT2101 comes equipped with a built-in transimpedance amplifier, providing an output voltage through an SMA connector. It is powered and controlled via a USB 2.0 mini port, which requires a supply of 4.5 to 5.5 VDC at a typical current of 350 mA. A USB 2.0 type A to mini adapter cable is included for easy connection to a computer, and the PMT2101 may be controlled by software that supports Windows® 7 and 10 (64-bit) operating systems.
In terms of mechanical mounting options, the PMT2101 features internal SM1 threads, four 4-40 taps for mounting on a 30 mm cage system, and a 1/4"-20 tapped hole for post mounting, providing versatile installation options. The compact size and low weight of the PMT2101 (3.43 in x 1.6 in x 2.10 in, 0.66 lbs) makes it an ideal choice for laboratory setups where space and mobility are important considerations.
PMTs are highly sought after for their ability to detect faint optical signals from weakly emitting sources. Compared to avalanche photodetectors (APDs), PMTs offer significantly larger active areas, making them ideal for capturing signals that may be diverging due to scatter or nonlinear optical effects. The PMT2101 features GaAsP detector elements for high sensitivity in the UV, visible, and NIR, and built-in high-voltage circuitry eliminates the need for a standalone high-voltage source, reducing the package's footprint and risk of electric shock.
