The ThorLabs SM1PD1A is a mounted Silicon photodiode, designed to accurately measure both pulsed and continuous wave (CW) fiber light sources with ease. The SM1PD1A efficiently converts optical power to an electrical current, making it an excellent addition to any existing setup requiring such measurements.
The SM1PD1A is conveniently mounted in an SM1 (Ø1.035"-40) externally threaded tube, making it easy to integrate into any compatible setup. This photodiode utilizes a Type A (Cathode Grounded) arrangement and has specific pin codes for different packages, ensuring accurate and precise results. By converting incident light power (P) and wavelength (λ) into a current, the photodiode anode produces a current that can be read from the responsivity curve to estimate the amount of photocurrent. A load resistor (RL) connected between the photodiode anode and circuit ground can effortlessly convert the current into a voltage.
Notably, the edges of the active area of detectors can create undesirable resistance and capacitance effects that might interfere with the photodiode output's time-domain response. To make sure the readings from the photodiode are accurate and precise, it is recommended that the incident light falls directly onto its active area with no misalignment. Optimal performance can be achieved by placing a lens or pinhole in front of the detector element to help focus the light.
