The BOA1004P by ThorLabs is an exceptional booster optical amplifier that is optimized for applications with known input polarization of light. It is ideal for both monochromatic and multi-wavelength signals. Compared to traditional SOA devices, the BOA1004P boasts superior bandwidth, gain, noise, and saturation power specifications due to its sensitive polarization design features.
With high saturation output power and bandwidth, the BOA1004P incorporates an efficient InP/InGaAsP Quantum Well (QW) layer structure and a reliable ridge waveguide design. It is housed in a14-pin butterfly package that are standardized with an integrated thermoelectric cooler (TEC) and thermistor, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Any PM-fiber pigtails that have FC/APC connectors will be compatible with this device, and the key of the connector will always be aligned to the slow axis on all models with PM-fiber pigtails. The BOA1004P is also compatible with optional polarization-maintaining isolators at either the output or input or both the output and input.
The BOA1004P offers low coupling losses, as well as free-space chips offered on submount or heatsink. Losses typically range from 1.5 to 2.5 dB for the fiber-to-chip and chip-to-fiber coupling (each). These losses have an impact on the device's total gain, noise figure (NF), and saturation power (Psat), even though the amplifier's gain exceeds the losses. Hence, these losses remain a crucial factor in determining the device's performance.
