The BOA1080P by ThorLabs is a state-of-the-art, single-pass, traveling-wave booster optical amplifier that's optimized for monochromatic and multi-wavelength signals. The BOA1080P is a fantastic choice for applications where the input polarization of the light is known, as it amplifies only one state of polarization.
The BOA1080P is designed to boost laser transmitters, compensate for transmit MUX/DeMUX insertion loss, and optical shutter. The BOA1080P comes housed in a standard 14-pin butterfly package with PMF pigtails that are terminated with FC/APC connectors. The connector key is aligned to the slow axis on all PMF pigtailed models, making it easy to install. The BOA1080P boasts superior specifications such as gain, noise, bandwidth, and saturation power. These features make it better than a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) because of the design that makes the SOA polarization insensitive. It's essential to note that an SOA is required for applications where the input polarization is unknown or fluctuates.
The BOA1080P features a highly productive InP/InGaAsP Multi-Quantum Well (MQW) composition, which leads to its optimal performance. The optical amplifier chip is equipped with a dependable ridge waveguide which is connected to the output and input of the amplifier. Losses typically range from 1.5 to 2.5 dB for the fiber-to-chip and chip-to-fiber coupling (each). These coupling losses can have a considerable impact on the total output power, as well as on the noise figure and saturation power of a system. Although the amplifier may give higher output than its losses, these losses can still make a big difference in its performance. Thus, it is important to consider them alongside gains when judging the device's overall effectiveness. As an example, a 1 dB decrease in input coupling results in a noise level increase of 1 dB and an output reduction of 1 dB leads to a corresponding drop of 1 dB in saturation power.
A driver option that's compatible with the BOA1080P is the CLD1015 butterfly LD/TEC controller. LD/TEC controllers and mounts provide a smooth, convenient control experience with the added bonus of a touch screen. Additionally, pin configurations that are classified as type 1 should be set in the correct orientation when used with the CLD1015 to operate the optical amplifiers.
