The HGR020 laser by ThorLabs is a versatile, high-performance helium-neon (HeNe) laser designed for a wide range of industrial and scientific applications. Its compact design and stable output power of 2.0 mW make it an excellent choice for applications that require precision and accuracy.

One of the key features of the HGR020 is its randomly polarized output, which makes it ideal for applications that require a single state of polarization that changes on a nanosecond time scale. The laser utilizes a blend of neon and helium gases at low pressure, inside a glass tube tubing that is sealed, as its gain medium. Electrical current is passed through a cathode and anode at either end of the tube, generating a high voltage that serves as the excitation source. An optical cavity has two mirrors - one that is highly reflective and the other with an approximate transmission of 1%. They are placed at opposite ends to form a cavity, that helps in containment of emitted light. The HGR020 comes equipped with a manual shutter installed in the front bezel of the laser housing. The front bezel also has four #4-40 UNC holes to secure standard HeNe accessories. The laser is compatible with a 3 ft long, high-voltage cable for connecting to the power supply.

The HGR020 is designed to operate at its optimum performance level when used with the compatible power supply. This power supply is CE-certified and enclosed in a protective housing, making it safe and easy to use. The power supply is also CDRH compliant and features a built-in 3 to 5 second time delay, an Alden high-voltage connector, a key lock switch with two removable keys, a power on indicator, a fuse access point, a remote interlock connector, and a removable input power cable. The power supply can be set up for 120 VAC or 240 VAC, making it suitable for use in a variety of settings. 

The HGR020's cylindrical construction allows for easy mounting in ring clamps, V-blocks, or similar mounting hardware without affecting the laser's alignment. However, it's important to exercise caution when clamping on the laser, as too much pressure can damage the aluminum housing or cause misalignment. Additionally, the laser head should always be secured into place to prevent it from rolling off the work surface and breaking.
