The ThorLabs HRR015 is a cylindrical, low-power Helium-Neon (HeNe) laser designed for a variety of applications. With an output power of 1.5 mW and a built-in interlock for safety, this red laser operates at a primary wavelength of 632.8 nm with a random polarization and beam divergence of 1.41 mrad. While the HRR015 operates randomly, it is not a truly unpolarized source, but rather a single state of polarization that changes on a small timescale. This laser is optimized for maritime visual guidance systems, alignment, opacity monitoring, imaging and medical equipment, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, food sorting, cleanroom monitoring, and metrology.

The HRR015 laser head comes equipped with a manual shutter installed in the front bezel of the laser housing. Additionally, the front bezel has four #4-40 UNC holes to secure a compatible accessory mounting ring or other standard accessories. The laser cavity can be designed with the correct mirrors and length to promote other wavelengths of laser emission. The HRR015 also features a 3 ft long, high voltage cable for connecting to the power supply. It is designed to operate at an optimum performance level when used with a specified power supply that is specially designed for use with this laser. This power supply is CE certified and enclosed in a protective housing.

The HRR015 is also CDRH compliant with a built-in 3 to 5 second time delay, an Alden high-voltage connector, a key lock switch with two removable keys, a power on indicator, a fuse access point, a remote interlock connector, and a removable input power cable. The gain medium of the HRR015 is a combination of neon and helium gasses in a 20:1 to 5:1 ratio that is contained in a glass tube that is sealed at a low pressure. This laser runs on a high voltage electrical discharge, supplied between the cathode and anode located at each end of the glass tube. The laser system has an optical cavity that is formed by two mirrors. One of the mirrors is highly reflective, located at the end of the tube, and the other is semi-transmissive with a transmission around 1%.

The linewidth of the HRR015 is specific to the application. The axial mode structure of the HeNe laser is characterized by the number of modes, the free spectral range (FSR), and the Doppler width. The linewidth of individual axial modes is usually small (~kHz) and is primarily determined by external factors and measurement timescales rather than fundamental laser parameters. When it comes to interferometric applications, the most essential factor is the coherence length, which is based on the axial modes that lie at the greatest distance from each other. For the HRR015, the coherence length is approximately 30 cm.
