The ThorLabs HRR020 is a Helium-Neon (HeNe) laser that has a its low-power output and typical red, 633 nm wavelength. The HRR020 boasts 2.0 mW of optical power, making it an ideal tool for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. This laser comes equipped with a built-in interlock, ensuring that the laser will not operate unless all safety measures are in place. Additionally, this laser offers random polarization, providing a single state of polarization that changes on a small timescale.

The HRR020 laser head's classic tube design makes it easy to mount in nearly any optical system, and it comes equipped with a manual shutter installed in the front bezel of the laser housing. The front bezel has four #4-40 UNC holes to secure the optional accessory mounting ring and other industry-standard HeNe accessories. To ensure optimal performance, the HRR020 laser head is designed to operate with a compatible power supply, which is enclosed in a protective housing and is CDRH compliant. The power supply comes equipped with several features, including a built-in 3 to 5-second time delay, an Alden high-voltage connector, a key lock switch with two removable keys, a power-on indicator, a fuse access point, a remote interlock connector, and a removable input power cable.

The HRR020 laser process starts with the electrons collision from the helium atoms in the gas electrical discharge, exciting the helium from a ground state to a long-lived, metastable excited state. Excited helium atoms collide with neon atoms that are ground-stated, exciting neon electrons. As the amount of neon atoms moving into the excited state builds up, population inversion is achieved. Stimulated and spontaneous emission between the states results in the emission of 632.82 nm light. The HRR020 laser's power output is limited the higher current saturates the upper neon level, while there is linear variation of the lower level with current. The linewidth of this laser is specific to the application and is primarily determined by external factors and measurement timescales rather than fundamental laser parameters. In most interferometric applications, the most relevant parameter is the coherence length (30cm for this laser), which can be found by the furthest apart axial modes.
