The ThorLabs IP500 is a highly versatile, universal laser diode driver that allows for easy and safe control of laser diodes in 5.6 mm or 9 mm TO-can packages. Designed for use within higher-level assemblies, The IP500 is also competitively priced for use in laboratory diode driver applications. Not only that, but the IP500 is also highly recommended for use in driving LEDs.
Featuring compatibility with pin configuration styles A, B, C, and D that have a monitor photodiode, the IP500 operates in either constant current or constant power mode with 25-turn potentiometers. It can be enabled on the board itself or over a remote switch connection, with connections provided for remote interlocks and remote monitoring. The laser diode current, monitor photodiode current, current limit, and power limit setpoints can all be easily accessed via the IP500's test points.
One of the standout features of the IP500 is its analog modulation of up to 50 kHz and operation capability from ±5 VDC. It accepts photodiode feedback currents of up to 2.0 mA and has pin configurations and operating modes that are easily set using on-board jumpers. Furthermore, the IP500 includes a separate ENABLE switch that turns the laser on and off, eliminating the need to power down the entire unit. During idle operation, the laser diode inputs are designed to short in order to protect the device. Additionally, the IP500 has an auto-alarm shutdown that sounds when the laser connection is open or reversed, providing an extra layer of protection for your equipment.
The IP500 also boasts a number of remote enable and lockout functions accessible on J4 of the unit, including a shunt jumper installed in J4 Pins 5-6 that serves as the remote lockout input. This remote lockout input must be shorted in order for the unit to switch to the enabled mode. Wiring harnesses can be utilized to make the proper connections from the IP500 to its power source and the laser diode to be driven. With a three-pin and four-pin connector mate, these harnesses should be connected to J1 of the IP500 and the ±5 V power supply.
