The ITC510 by ThorLabs is an advanced benchtop laser diode controller that provides precise laser current control and temperature control for high-performance applications. This device is designed for low-noise operation and exceptional performance, making it one of the most advanced combination controllers available.

Though it does not contain a microprocessor, the ITC510 is designed with features of a typical microprocessor-based user interface to provide superior noise performance without sacrificing ease of use. The ITC510 is designed to be user friendly with a 5-digit LED display that is divided into two clear sections: the temperature control section and the current source section. The current source section displays laser current, laser voltage, monitor current, optical power, current limit, and reverse bias voltage data, while the temperature control section shows the set temperature, actual temperature, TEC current, TEC voltage, TEC current limit, and set temperature window data. Both sections operate independently from each other, providing users with a simple and intuitive interface.

One of the standout features of the ITC510 is its ability to modulate the laser diode in both constant power mode and constant current power with a maximum modulation frequency of 200kHz. To improve the frequency response when modulating the laser at high frequencies, the monitor photodiode may be required to be operated with a reverse bias voltage. Additionally, the gain of the constant power mode control loop can be adjusted to accommodate different laser diodes, while the photodiode can be calibrated to read out the laser power in milliwatts, providing unparalleled accuracy and precision.

The ITC510 is also equipped with several built-in protective measures to prevent laser diode damage and over-temperature of the device. These features include an automatic over-temperature switch that turns off the output current to prevent exceeding the operating temperature of the ITC510. Once the internal temperature drops about 10 degrees Celsius, the output current can be turned on again. Other protective measures include electronic short circuit protection of the laser diode when the output is switched off, soft start, transient suppression in the instance of mains failure, a mains filter that is suitable, shielding of the transformer, interlock features, temperature window protection, open circuit detection, and no sensor detection.
