The LDC500 by ThorLabs is a laser diode controller, the ultimate solution for precise and reliable control of laser diodes and LEDs. Designed with cutting-edge technology, this device is an exceptional controller that can be used alongside the TEC2000 temperature controller to accurately measure the temperature and optical output power of the laser diode. With the LDC500, the user can achieve a stable and safe operation of all laser diodes up to 0.5A, power stabilized light sources, and wavelength tuning by controlling the current and modulation by current modulation.

The LDC500 boasts an easy-to-use 4 ½-digit LDC display and an intuitive front panel arrangement that enables the user to select and display the operating levels such as laser power, current limit, laser current, and photodiode current via a push-button switch. Additionally, laser diodes and photodiodes are connected using a DB9 female connector, which is located at the rear of the unit. The LDC500 is compatible with all laser diode polarities available on the market, thanks to its bipolar output for the laser diode and input for the photodiode.

To ensure the safety of the laser diode, the LDC500 comes equipped with several safety measures, including a safety interlock that monitors the laser diode mount connect, the ability to turn the laser diode off and on utilizing a separate enable switch, and a monitor LED light that indicates when the laser diode is switched on. The 20-turn potentiometer allows users to set a separate limit for the laser current, thereby shielding the laser diode from errors in operating. To prevent any damage to the laser diode, an electric switch is used which stops voltage from flowing when the output is open. This effectively disrupts the current and shields the device from harm. The function of soft start and on/off delay protects the laser diode against spikes that are undesired. An internal fan provides cooling to protect the LDC500 against overheating and high environmental temperatures, ensuring safe operation of the unit at ambient temperatures of at least 40 °C.
