The LDC8005 by ThorLabs is an advanced laser current control module that has been designed to provide precise control and stability over laser diode currents. With a maximum laser diode current of ±500 mA, the LDC8005 is capable of driving cathode grounded and anode grounded lasers with extremely low current noise and drift.

The LDC8005 is a bipolar current source that operates in the same way across different module types, with differences only in maximum current, resolution, and accuracy. This system is fitted with a transimpedance amplifier, which can be used for both positive and negative polarity of the diode for the monitor diode. The monitor diode can be operated either photovoltaic or photoconductive, with a bias voltage of UBIAS=5V.

One of the key features of the LDC8005 is its user-friendly PRO8 display menu that enables any chassis mode to be eaily configurated of any module in the chassis. All settings for the necessary values can be easily done through the mainframe operating elements, including the rotational encoder and keypad or through a computer, remotely. The only parameter that requires manual setting is the laser diode "absolute hardware limit" or current limit, making it an ideal choice for automated test set-ups for different laser diodes.

The LDC8005 offers both constant current and constant power mode operation, enabling modulation of laser diode current or optical power with an external voltage signal and a resolution of up to 16 bits. The modulation bandwidth is specified as "small signal 3 dB bandwidth," meaning that the modulation current amplitude does not exceed 10% of the maximum current that the LDC8005 can deliver. This ensures that the modulating current is superposed to the laser set current, with all protective functions remaining active to keep the laser running safely.

The LDC8005 is equipped with multiple safety features to protect the laser diode, including a soft start function when switching on the laser diode current, limits for injection current and optical power, interruption control of the connection cable, open-circuit protection, an electronic short-circuit switch, separate on and off functions, a control LED for activated laser current, over-temperature protection, and laser protection. The built-in mains filter in the mainframe of the LDC8005 and the careful shielding of the microprocessor, transformer and module itself provide the suppressed, which helps to ensure stable operation in noise and ripple. even the most demanding applications.
