ThorLabs LDM405

The LDM405 from ThorLabs is a compact laser diode module that is ideal for benchtop optical experiments. This advanced module is equipped with several features, including a collimated output beam, an integrated beam shutter, and compliance with the IEC60825-1/CDRH standards.

At the heart of the LDM405 is a laser diode with a wavelength of 405 nm, enclosed in a sturdy Ø1.40" by 5.8" housing that contains a collimating lens and automatic power control circuit. The included laser diode is a Fabry-Perot model with a typical bandwidth of around 1 nm, collimating lens, and power controller. The LDM405 is designed to work seamlessly with an extensive range of optomechanical devices from lens tubes to lens mounts and features an SM1 internal thread for mounting.

The LDM405 comes equipped with a built-in shutter and can be mounted to an optical table using compatible C1512, C1513, or VC3C V-groove mounts. For added convenience, the module features a remote interlock connection, key-lock power switch, enable/disable toggle switch, a laser on indicator LED, and top-located power adjustment potentiometer. The LDM405’s power can be adjusted from 0 to full power by adjusting the potentiometer, and the output of each laser diode is polarized and multi-longitudinal mode. When the Laser Enable button is facing up, the light will be vertically polarized, while horizontal polarization will result if it is facing down. The LDM405 is supplied with a universal power supply and can be safely operated when located on a solid, dry working surface, preferably mounted on an optical table.

The safety of the LDM405 is of paramount importance. Direct exposure to the eye can be hazardous, although it diffuses reflections from paper or other matte surfaces, which are not harmful. The LDM405 is categorized as a class 3R laser radiation, posing either an acute intrabeam or chronic viewing hazard based on irradiance along with an acute viewing risk if viewed directly through optical instruments. Nonetheless, it is deemed very low risk and "safe under reasonably foreseeable use.” Protective eyewear should be worn when directly viewing the laser to protect the user against these hazards from the laser diode.
