The LPS-1550-FC by ThorLabs is a high-performance single mode fiber-pigtailed laser diode. The LPS-1550-FC laser diode is designed to deliver reliable, efficient performance in a variety of scientific and industrial applications.

The LPS-1550-FC features a 1 m long single mode fiber that is pigtailed to the laser diode with an FC/PC connector. The alignment process of the pigtail has been optimized to ensure maximum coupling efficiency of the laser emission into the single mode pigtail. Multiple test and inspection points are employed to guarantee the highest quality output from every unit. The end of the fiber cable is meticulously cut at an 8° angle in order to reduce any output intensity changes due to back reflections.

The central wavelength of the LPS-1550-FC is 1550 nm, although this may vary slightly from unit to unit. For stable output power and wavelength, it is strongly recommended to use a temperature controller with the LPS-1550-FC. Diodes can be temperature-tuned to alter the lasing wavelength, but it should be noted that the reliability of the laser diode rapidly declines at higher temperatures. As with all laser diodes, the LPS-1550-FC is sensitive to electrostatic shock, and proper precautions should be taken when handling the device. An ESD wrist strap is recommended for optimal safety.

The LPS-1550-FC is prone to optical feedback, which can cause drastic changes in the laser diode's output power, depending on the situation. To ensure optimal performance, it is recommended to clean the fiber connector of the LPS-1550-FC before each use if there is any chance that dust or other contaminants may have deposited on the surface. The laser intensity at the center of the fiber tip can be very high and may burn the tip of the fiber if contaminants are present. Finally, it is important to note that the laser should be turned off when connecting or disconnecting the LPS-1550-FC from other fibers, particularly for lasers with power levels above 10 mW.
