The M420L3 by ThorLabs is a cutting-edge mounted LED designed for precision illumination applications. The M420L3 is mounted to the end of a Ø30.5 mm heat sink, which provides efficient thermal management and minimizes power decay due to temperature changes. It features a unique thermal design that ensures optimal performance even under demanding conditions.

To operate the M420L3, a constant current not exceeding 1000 mA is required, with a forward voltage of 3.5 V. The M8x1 circular connector is used to plug the M420L3 into a system, with pins 1 and 2 providing power to the LED and pins 3 and 4 allocated for storing information within the internal EEPROM. It's important to note that these connections should only be used with a compatible LED driver to ensure safe and reliable operation.

The EEPROM chip that is integrated into the M420L3 stores crucial information about the LED, including current limit, wavelength, and forward voltage. This information can be easily accessed by compatible LED controllers such as DC2200 and DC4100, allowing for precise control and monitoring of the LED performance. For custom power supplies, a 4-pin female mating connector can be used for seamless integration. In addition to its exceptional performance, the M420L3 also offers convenient adjustability. It can translate a Ø2" (50 mm) lens by up to 20 mm, thanks to its translating carriage that can be locked using a 2 mm (5/64") hex key or balldriver. This provides flexibility in collimation adjustment, allowing for precise alignment and focusing of the LED beam.

The M420L3 also features an internal SM2 (2.035"-40) thread adapter, making it compatible with a wide range of SM2-threaded components such as microscope port adapters, offering versatility in system integration. Furthermore, the M420L3 incorporates an AR-coated aspheric lens optimized for a wavelength range of 350 - 700 nm, ensuring optimal transmission and performance. It's important to provide proper air ventilation to avoid overheating, drops in optical power, and reduced lifetime of the LED. Each LED has a characteristic switch-on behavior that depends on its properties and environment conditions, and heat dissipation is a critical factor to consider for optimal performance.
