The M470L2 by ThorLabs is a high-power mounted LED with a dominant wavelength of 470 nm. This LED is equipped with an internal SM1 (1.035"-40) thread and a heat sink that ensures maximum performance output. The M470L2 provides an output of more than 830 mW and must be supplied with a constant current that does not exceed 1600 mA. The current source should be able to deliver this current at a forward voltage of 3.5 V.
The M470L2 is blue in color and requires air ventilation during use to prevent reduced lifetime, drops in optical power, and overheating. Each M470L2 unit has a unique switch-on behavior that depends on the LED properties and environmental conditions. However, this LED has a unique thermal design that reduces power decay to a minimum. The heat sink is highly effective in managing the LED's temperature, reducing power loss as it reaches its equilibrium temperature. It is important to note that the M470L2 is not water-resistant and should be protected from adverse weather conditions. Do not expose it to spray, liquids, or solvents to avoid damage. The LED does not require regular maintenance and does not have any user-serviceable parts. To prevent malfunctions of any sort, the user should avoid opening the enclosure.
It is also essential to adhere to protective measures while using the M470L2, as inappropriate use can result in permanent eye damage. If used in a microscope application as a replacement for a mercury vapor lamp, the same precautions should be taken. During normal operations, the LED’s casing temperature may exceed ambient temperature by as much as 25 °C (45 °F). To prevent higher case temperatures, the devices should be operated without anything hindering air movement around the convective cooling fans. Additionally, the M470L2 should not be operated in an explosive environment and should only be used with shielded connection cables.
