The ThorLabs M530F1 is an exceptional fiber-coupled LED that is designed for compatibility with SMA fiber connectors. The M530F1 emits light at a nominal wavelength of 530 nm and delivers more than 4.0 mW of power, while being mounted on a heat sink for optimal heat dissipation.

The M530F1 is designed to be supplied with a constant current that must not exceed 1000 mA. It is crucial that the current source delivers this current at a forward voltage of 3.6 V to ensure optimal performance. The M530F1 comprises a single LED that is coupled to the optical fiber using the butt-coupling technique, which minimizes losses at the fiber input and maximizes output power. The effectiveness of the coupling is mainly dependent on the diameter of the core and the numerical aperture (NA) of the bonding fiber. Larger core diameters and higher NA values give rise to reduced losses and increased output power at the end of the fiber.

The M530F1 supports fiber connectivity via an SMA fiber connector, and its optical output power is guaranteed for a Ø400 µm MMF with an NA of 0.39 when the LED current reaches its limit. The core diameter and optical power increase at the same rate, which is almost proportional to the square of the NA. This LED has a characteristic switch-on behavior, which depends on the LED properties and the environmental conditions, such as heat dissipation. Additionally, the M530F1 has a unique thermal design that reduces power decay to a minimum. It is essential to provide air ventilation for the M530F1 to prevent overheating, drops in optical power, and reduced lifetime. The M530F1 possesses good thermal stability properties, and the 34 mm long, passively-cooled heat sink is in direct contact with the metal-core circuit board on which the LED is mounted. This minimizes the degradation of optical output power caused by increased LED junction temperature.

The M530F1 is equipped with an integrated EEPROM (read-only memory) chip storing information about the LED, such as the current limit, wavelength, and forward voltage, which can be read by compatible drivers. These drivers can automatically adjust the maximum current setting based on the information stored in the EEPROM chip to protect the connected LED. The DC4100 and DC4104 are compatible drivers that can modulate the M530F1 at a rate up to 100 kHz, while the DC2200 can provide modulation at up to 250 kHz if driven by an external source. A fourth driver, the LEDD1B, is capable of providing LED modulation frequencies up to 5 kHz, but is not capable of reading information from the EEPROM chip.
