The M530F2 by ThorLabs is a Fiber-Coupled LED that is utilized as an exceptional light source for optogenetics applications with a wavelength of 530 nm and a long lifetime of over 50,000 hours. 

The M530F2 consists of an LED that is mounted to a heat sink with an SMA fiber bulkhead, making it simple to integrate into any optical setup using a compatible SMA-terminated multimode fiber patch cable. Butt-coupling the LED to the SMA fiber connector on the patch cable provides a seamless connection, allowing for the use of hybrid patch cables to transition to an FC/PC connector, ferrule end, or bare fiber. With a nominal wavelength of 530 nm and an output of more than 6.8 mW of power, the M530F2's thermal and heat sink design reduces power decay to a minimum, providing excellent thermal management and preventing overheating.

The M530F2 requires a constant current that must not exceed 1000 mA to avoid drops in optical power and reduced lifetime. To prevent overheating, air ventilation should be provided for the device. The heat sink of the M530F2 offers excellent thermal management, reducing power loss as the LED reaches its equilibrium temperature when switched on.

The M530F2's male connector is a standard M8x1 sensor circular connector, with pins 1 and 2 connecting to the LED and pins 3 and 4 used for the internal EEPROM when using a compatible LED driver. Fiber connection to the M530F2 must be made via an SMA fiber connector, and it is recommended to use a multimode (MMF) fiber with an NA of 0.39 at the maximum allowed LED current. The optical power of a fiber increases proportionally with an increase in its core diameter and according to the square of its numerical aperture. Additionally, the M530F2 is not water-resistant and must be protected from adverse weather conditions. To avoid damage, it should not be exposed to spray, liquids, or solvents. The M530F2 does not contain any parts serviceable by the user and does not require regular user maintenance, making it a reliable and low-maintenance option for optogenetics applications.
