The ThorLabs M660F1 is a fiber-coupled LED that is designed for applications that require a reliable, high-performance light source. The M660F1 comprises a single LED that is expertly coupled to an optical fiber via the butt-coupling technique, ensuring optimal light transmission and minimal losses at the fiber input. The M660F1 excels in terms of coupling efficiency, which mainly stems from its connector fiber's core diameter and numerical aperture (NA).

The M660F1 features a nominal wavelength of 660 nm and has an output power of 13.0 mW. The LED is mounted to the end of a heat sink, which ensures that the LED remains cool during operation, thus minimizing any negative effects on the optical output power. The M660F1 is compatible with SMA fiber connectors and requires a constant current that should not exceed 1000 mA. The current source must be able to deliver this current at a forward voltage of 2.15 V. It is recommended to use a multimode (MMF) fiber with an NA of 0.39 and a core diameter of Ø400 µm for fiber connection.

When the M660F1 is utilized with an optical fiber, it can show a behavior which appears paradoxical. The high-energy emission from the LED causes a change in the optical properties of the fiber, resulting in a slow decrease in insertion loss and an improvement in coupling properties. This change leads to an increase in optical power, which stabilizes at a value of between 5 to 20 minutes after the M660F1 LED is switched on, depending on the fiber type and wavelength. This process is reversible, although the relaxation can take hours, and can be forced by heating the fiber. It is advised to pay close attention to this behavior, especially if the application is sensitive to power stability.

The M660F1 possesses excellent thermal stability properties, thanks to its 34 mm long, passively-cooled heat sink, which is in direct contact with the metal-core circuit board on which the LED is mounted. This design minimizes the degradation of optical output power caused by an increase in LED junction temperature. To avoid overheating, reduced lifetime, and drops in optical power, we recommend providing adequate air ventilation. The M660F1 has a characteristic switch-on behavior that depends on the LED's properties and environmental conditions. One of the most important criteria is heat dissipation. Additionally, the M660F1's unique thermal design ensures that power decay is reduced to a minimum.
