The S1FC1550 by ThorLabs is a high-quality, Fabry-Perot benchtop laser source that is perfect for a variety of applications. Operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm, this laser source features a current controller and a pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode that is connected to a single mode fiber. The fiber is terminated at an FC/PC bulkhead and attached to the front panel of the unit, using a compatible single mode fiber optic patch cable.
On the front panel of the S1FC1550, there is a display that shows the output power, an enable button, a key that toggles between on and off, and a knob that can adjust the power of the laser. The panel located on the back of the unit includes an input that allows the laser diode drive current to be controlled via an external DC or sine wave voltage source and a remote interlock input. It should be noted that the laser must be turned off when connecting or disconnecting fibers from the S1FC1550, especially for power levels above 10 mW, for the safety of both the user and the device.
The S1FC1550 is equipped with a MOD IN input that can be used in the modulation of the output of the laser, or to set the laser output remotely using a +5 V power source. A input of 5 volts is the highest that can be set when calibrating the power of a laser source. Each unit is calibrated to achieve the maximum power for the particular laser diode used in the device. Due to variations in the coupling process, each S1FC1550 unit will have the same maximum power.
In addition to its other features, the S1FC1550 also has a remote interlock connector on the panel located to the rear of the unit. In order for the laser source to activate, the terminals of the remote interlock connector must be connected via a short circuit. This connection is provided in order to enable the user to link a switch which can be operated remotely to the connector. The switch, which must be normally open, has to be closed in order for the S1FC1550 unit to be enabled. Once the switch is in an open state, the laser source will automatically shut down. If the switch returns to a closed condition, the laser source must be re-enabled at the unit by pressing the ENABLE switch.
