The S1FC635 by ThorLabs is a benchtop laser source that is designed for the precise coupling and control of laser diode drive fiber optics. The S1FC635 combines a current controller and a Fabry-Perot laser diode that is pig-tailed into a singular benchtop unit while also having a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate. This simple interface allows users to adjust laser power and monitor output levels with ease.

The S1FC635’s laser diode is linked to one single mode fiber. This single mode fiber is fixed to a FC/PC bulkhead which is placed to the front of the unit. To minimize the risk of data loss, it is strongly recommended to use a fiber patch cable that matches the fiber type as the laser. This will ensure maximum performance and avoid any issues. For eliminating back reflection noises, a hybrid FC/APC to FC/PC cable is highly recommended. This cable should have the FC/PC side attached to the source where the laser is located.

The front of the S1FC635 is equipped with a display screen which indicates the output power in mW, a power button, and enable button, as well as a knob that allows the user to adjust the level of power. The panel to the back of the laser diode includes an input that allows the drive current to be modified using either a sine wave voltage supply or external DC. Additionally, it has a remote interlock feature to ensure safety. The S1FC635 also comes with a Fabry-Perot source that emits at a wavelength of 635 nm with a standard single mode fiber output.

For added convenience and safety, the S1FC635 features a remote interlock connector located at the rear of the unit. Activating the laser source requires a short circuit to be established between the two terminals of the remote interlock connector. This function allows the user to attach a switch to the connector, such as an open door signal, which is usually in the ‘open’ position. The switch can then be activated remotely. If the switch is closed, the unit is enabled, and if the switch is open, the laser source automatically shuts down. In the latter case, the user must re-enable the unit by pressing the ENABLE switch.
