The S3FC1550 by ThorLabs is an exceptional benchtop fiber coupled laser source. The S3FC1550 is a 1550 nm wavelength laser source that is specifically engineered to provide easy coupling and straightforward control of laser diode driven fiber optics. The device is equipped with a narrow linewidth Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser diode and a 40 dB optical isolator to eliminate back reflections and frequency jitter, ensuring excellent performance.
The S3FC1550 boasts an integrated temperature control system that enhances wavelength and power stability. The user can adjust the diode temperature and output power using the two front panel adjustment knobs, allowing the DFB laser diode to be fine-tuned to match the laser cavity. Additionally, the front panel of the S3FC1550 includes a display that shows the output power in mW or the temperature in °C, an on/off key, an enable button, and the FC/PC bulkhead connector. The device's back panel features an input that allows the laser diode drive current to be controlled via an external voltage source and a remote interlock input.
The S3FC1550 comes with a MOD IN input that enables the user to control the laser output either through modulation or by connecting a +5V power source. This offers great flexibility in setting and controlling the laser output remotely. When a modulation input of 5 V is used, the output power will vary depending on the operating temperature. The device's output is offset to the threshold current of the coupled laser diode to eliminate a dead zone in the power control knob. Therefore, when the PWR ADJ knob is full counter clockwise, the drive current is not zero but actually at the threshold current. This should be kept in mind when using the modulation input.
Safety is a top priority when working with laser sources, and the S3FC1550 has been designed with this in mind. The rear panel of the device is designed with a remote interlock connector for added convenience. To activate the laser source, a short circuit needs to be connected between the two terminals of the remote interlock connector. This feature provides users with the ability to connect a switch that can be triggered from a remote location, such as an open door indicator, to the connector. The switch, which is open normally, has to be closed to enable the unit. If the switch returns to an open state, the S3FC1550 will automatically shut down. To re-enable the laser source, simply press the ENABLE switch on the unit.
