The GNL18 is a large goniometer from Thorlabs that is engineered to provide accurate and precise rotation of an object within a small angular range about a fixed point in space. With a rotation of ±5° and a distance to point of rotation of 1.75 inches, the GNL18 goniometer is an essential tool for researchers, engineers, and scientists who require highly accurate and repeatable positioning of samples, optics, or components in their experiments and projects. Instead of just having a straight linear movement, this stage has an added advantage of a partial rotation about its fixed point from the surface it is mounted on. The GNL18 was designed in such a way that two different goniometer models can be placed in an XY formation while both being able to rotate around the same point. This is done by precisely calculating the distance from the point of rotation to the mounting surface. This neat, stackable design allows models to be attached together, ensuring their points of rotation line up perfectly.

The GNL18 goniometer uses a precision micrometer for enhanced angular positioning of the top plate, and its accuracy of 10 arcmin ensures reliable and precise positioning of the sample or component. This goniometer is engineered with a one-pound (1 lb) maximum load capacity, and its precise dovetail design with a backlash-free lead screw and vernier scale lets you make repeatable, accurate adjustments. A side-mounted setscrew can be used to lock the platform in position, providing additional stability and precision during experiments.

The goniometer provides an array of four 2-56, four 4-40 (M2.5 x 0.45), and eight 6-32 (M3 x 0.5) taps for mounting, making it highly versatile and compatible with a wide range of components and accessories. The GNL18 can be either post mounted via an 8-32 (M4) tap or mounted to an MS12B(/M) Mini-Series breadboard via the #4 (M3) slotted mounting holes on the base plate. Additionally, the Thorlabs GNL18 series can be mounted onto a standard breadboard or Mini-Series breadboard with 1/4"-20 (M6) taps via the 1/4" (M6) slotted mounting holes on the base plate. Attempting to remove the base plate from the goniometer is not advised, since removing it could damage the fine adjustments made to the stage, which would necessitate recalibration or readjustment. Using mounting hardware that exceeds the tap depth of the mounting holes will also damage the stage.

The dimensions of the GNL18 goniometer are 1.50 in x 1.50 in x 0.75 in, and the dimensions of the baseplate are 1.50 in x 2.50 in x 0.20 in (Imperial) and 38.1 mm x 62.7 mm x 5.1 mm (Metric), making it easy to integrate into any setup or experiment.
