The HFC007 by ThorLabs is an exceptional side loading fiber chuck that is specifically designed to accept optical fibers with diameters up to 200 µm after the coating has been stripped. This fiber chuck has a brass body with a 0.2mm slot that can conveniently mount bare optical fibers into optical systems. It is important to note that the HFC007 chuck provides a more secure hold on fibers that are closer to the 200 µm maximum.
The HFC007 chuck is loaded from the side, which allows for cleaving of the fiber prior to loading. A spring clip is used to secure the fiber in place within the chuck, however, there is not a great enough clamping force to prevent the potential rotation of the fiber. As a result, this chuck should not be placed inside a rotator such as the HFR001 or used with the HFP001 polarization-maintaining fiber chuck holder. The dimensions of the HFC007 chuck are 2.36" (60 mm) in length and Ø0.25" (Ø6.4 mm) in diameter. Additionally, a crimped spring steel retaining clip is included to hold the fiber in the slot when it is placed inside.
It is important to note that fiber should not be stripped of its coating prior to use with the HFC007. A typical fiber comprises a core, cladding, and coating. The coating, also known as a buffer, serves to protect the cladding of glass fibers from particulates that may land on the surface of the fiber. However, certain specialized fibers have coatings with optical properties that allow them to act as a second cladding layer. In such cases, it is important to consider the optical properties of the fiber before stripping off the coating layer.
