The MTS50/M-Z8 by ThorLabs is a translation stage that works as an advanced motorized device that provides linear motion in a single direction, making it ideal for a wide range of applications in various fields. The MTS50/M-Z8 is equipped with dual linear rails and protective ball bearings for the easy, low friction carriage movement that can handle a high load capacity. The constantly circulating ball bearings provide an extra layer of smoothness to the motion.

The MTS50/M-Z8 boasts an impressive design, with eighteen 4-40 (M3) tapped holes and one centered 8-32 (M4) tapped hole, enabling direct mounting of small optomechanics to the moving platform. Moreover, the stage comes equipped with a 0.5 m (1.64 ft) long motor cable and is compatible with an extension cable if required. The stage is powered by a brushed, built-in 50 mm DC servo motor and features a built-in hall effect encoder that provides 12,288 counts per revolution, representing 29 nm of motion per single encoder count. The actual minimum repeatable incremental movement of the stage itself is 0.8 µm.

With limit switches, the MTS50/M-Z8 ensures controlled motion within the parameters of the unit and prevents overdriving in both directions. The travel range of the stage is 50 mm, and it is configurable in XY, XZ, and XYZ in both left- and right-handed configurations using spacer plates. Additionally, with base plates, the stage can be bolted directly to an optical table, and the sizes of travel stages can be configured together for added flexibility. While mounting the stage close to other equipment, it is essential to ensure that the travel of the moving platform is not obstructed to prevent damage to the internal mechanism.
