The A397-C by ThorLabs is a high-quality, unmounted molded glass aspheric lens designed to focus or collimate light with unparalleled precision, all while avoiding the introduction of spherical aberration into the transmitted wavefront. One of the most notable features of the A397-C is its broadband antireflection (AR) coating. This coating has been deposited on both sides of the lens and operates within the 1050 nm - 1700 nm wavelength range.
The A397-C is particularly well-suited to applications that require mitigation of spherical aberration. In fact, this lens is often considered to be the best single element solution for many applications, including light coupling into a fiber, collimation of a fiber output or laser diode output, detector light imaging, and spatial filtering. It is worth noting that the A397-C is best used in applications where light is collimated from a point source or laser diode. In these situations, the flatter side of the lens (which has a greater radius of curvature) should face the point source or laser diode to achieve optimal results.
