The AC254-045-A1 by ThorLabs is an exceptional unmounted visible achromatic doublet that is designed with advanced computer optimization to provide unparalleled performance in the visible region. The AC254-045-A1 is an ideal solution for any application where chromatic aberration must be controlled and a diffraction-limited spot can be achieved with a monochromatic source, such as a laser.
Compared to singlet lenses, the AC254-045-A1 boasts superior optical performance, making it the ideal choice for imaging applications that demand high precision and laser beam manipulation. The helium “D” line (587.6nm, yellow), hydrogen “F” (486.1nm, blue/green), and “C” (656.3nm, red) lines are used to define the Abbe V number of a material and represent the visible spectrum. The AC254-045-A1 exhibits much-reduced sensitivity to centration of the lenses on the beam axis, resulting in greatly reduced lateral and transverse aberrations.
What sets the AC254-045-A1 apart is its nearly constant focal length across a wide range of wavelengths. The circle of least confusion and focal point are blurred by chromatic aberration with the use of a white light source and a singlet lens. This unwanted effect is caused by the variation of a material’s refractive index with incident wavelength. However, the AC254-045-A1 is composed of two lenses, each with a different refractive index, which partially compensates for chromatic aberration, leading to its superior performance.
