The AC254-100-A-ML by ThorLabs is a high-quality achromatic doublet lens designed to provide exceptional optical performance in various setups. This lens is pre-mounted in engraved threaded mounts, making it easy to incorporate into optical systems. Featuring a diameter of Ø1", a focal length of 100 mm, and an anti-reflective (AR) coating for the 400 nm - 700 nm range, the AC254-100-A-ML is optimized for controlling chromatic aberration and achieving diffraction-limited spots when used with monochromatic sources such as lasers.
The engraved markings on the AC254-100-A-ML provide crucial information, including the part number, focal length, and direction of light propagation for collimating a point source. The arrow engraved on the lens points from the side with the larger radius of curvature (flatter side) to the side with the smaller radius of curvature, indicating the recommended direction of light propagation for collimation. For focusing a collimated beam, the arrow should point in the opposite direction of light propagation.
To achieve the best performance from the AC254-100-A-ML, it is recommended to orient the lens with the side having the largest radius of curvature facing away from the collimated beam. The infinity symbol is symbolic of a lens having an infinite conjugate ratio. This means that if something like a light source is placed a focal length away from the flatter side of the lens, it will emit collimated rays from its curved side. Furthermore, the AC254-100-A-ML has a computer-optimized design at infinite conjugate ratios, using helium "d" (587.6 nm, yellow), hydrogen "F" (486.1 nm, blue/green), and hydrogen "C" (656.3 nm, red) lines as the design wavelengths. The Abbe Number (V) of a material is often determined by the wavelengths which can reasonably represent the visible spectrum, ensuring consistent and reliable performance.
