The AC254-500-A1 by ThorLabs is an visible achromatic doublet designed to deliver outstanding visible region optical performance, and is ideal for use in applications in which chromatic aberration needs to be carefully controlled. The AC254-500-A1 incorporates lines in the yellow helium "D", blue/green hydrogen "F", and red "C" regions of the visible spectrum, which define the Abbe number of the material. This achromatic doublet has been computer optimized to ensure excellent performance.
The AC254-500-A1 offers superior optical performance in comparison to singlet lenses. It has a sensitivity that is greatly reduced to the lenses centration on the axis of the beam, and both transverse and lateral aberrations are greatly reduced when using this doublet in comparison to using a plano-convex lens. One of the most significant advantages of the AC254-500-A1 is its ability to partially compensate for chromatic aberration. This unwanted effect is a result of the variation of a material's refractive index with incident wavelength, which causes the focal point and circle of least confusion to be obscured by chromatic aberration when using a source of white light with a singlet lens. But, the AC254-500-A1 can partially compensate for this effect since it is made up of two different lenses, that boast unique refractive indexes, resulting in partial cancellation of this unwanted effect.
