The AL1815-B by ThorLabs is a superior-quality aspheric lens with a unique computer numerical control (CNC) polish. CNC machines have made it possible to grind and polish lenses of large diameters (≥10 mm). An example of this is AL1815-B, which has a 18mm diameter and delivers near-diffraction-limited performance.
The AL1815-B has been designed and engineered to efficiently direct the light incident on its aspheric side with minimal spherical aberration. However, it can also be used for collimation when light is incident on the plano side. This aspheric lens is available with a 0.53 numerical aperture, which offers high light-gathering ability while minimizing spherical aberration. The AL1815-B is uncoated and is fabricated from a S-LAH64 substrate, which offers high transmission from the visible through the NIR. The S-LAH64 substrate has a higher index of refraction than a N-BK7 substrate, making it the preferred choice for fabricating high-NA, short-focal-length lenses, such as the AL1815-B. This aspheric lens is also mountable into a lens tube assembly with a standard retaining ring, making it easy to integrate into a variety of optical systems.
