The ThorLabs FB1050-10 is a premium soft-coated bandpass filter that is ideal for those who require a well-defined wavelength band of light while eliminating unwanted radiation. The FB1050-10 boasts 1050 nm center wavelength and an 1 inch outer diameter, which is mounted in a black anodized aluminum ring. The maximum of 6.3 mm edge thickness of this filter makes it sturdy and long-lasting.

The FB1050-10 filter is designed using thin Fabry-Perot Interferometer technology that uses two reflecting stacks, that is detached by an even-order spacer layer. The two reflecting stacks are made up of layers that alternate between high and low refractive index materials, which can reflect up to 99.99% of the light. The thickness of the spacer layer and/or the number of the reflecting layers of the FB1050-10 can be adjusted to alter the central wavelength and bandwidth of the filter.

Due to its Fabry-Perot design, the FB1050-10 is designed for use at a 0° angle of incidence. Using other angles of incidence can result in a shift in wavelength of the transmission band and can possibly lower its overall effectiveness. The FB1050-10 is meant to be used with collimated light normally incident on the surface of the filter. Any uncollimated light or light striking the surface at an angle not normally incident to the surface may cause the central wavelength to shift towards lower wavelengths and change the shape of the transmission region. However, changing the angle of incidence by a small amount can be used to tune the passband over a narrow range.

The central wavelength of the FB1050-10 can also be slightly tuned by changing the temperature of the filter. This is due to the slight thermal expansion or contraction of the layers. This filter has a bandpass region with high transmission, however, the blocked light spectral range is narrow on both sides of the bandpass region. Therefore, an additional blocking component is added to eliminate out-of-band radiation that is unwanted. This additional component reduces the overall transmission of the filter’s throughput but ensures that only the desired wavelength band is transmitted. To enhance the blocking OD and make handling easier, the FB1050-10's ring is labeled with an arrow that indicates the design propagation direction. The ring also limits scattering and allows the filter to be mounted into a compatible internally-threaded lens tube.
